As you know, many of today’s professions involve sitting in front of a computer or carrying heavy loads. This reality is linked to absenteeism rates at work, as you can see from this short description;
Annual volume of employee absences in 2023 :
- Illness/accident 64.2% ;
- Maternity 9.6% ;
- Other reasons 21.6%.
The percentage of absences due to illness/accident and other reasons remains very high. In particular, these are minor repetitive injuries, chronic persistent injuries to the musculoskeletal system due to repetition, load, intensity and inadequate posture.

Office computer workstation analysis
This service is offered by Physiotherapists qualified in biomechanical ergonomics and is aimed at workers and company managers. The physiotherapist analyses the workstation environment and, thanks to his knowledge of ergonomics, can act in a preventive and informative capacity by offering training to companies. Physiotherapists can also adapt workstations, provide advice on layout and help with equipment selection, as well as practical day-to-day exercises to counteract the postures associated with long hours of sitting and repetitive movements.
This service is available to all workers. The physiotherapist analyses work activities and tasks in the actual work environment. He determines the physical and cognitive requirements of the job and the potential risk factors for the worker’s health and safety. Where necessary, it issues recommendations.
Work-related musculoskeletal diseases
Pain in the kidneys and back, shoulders, arms and hands, hips, knees and feet are symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders. They are referred to as musculoskeletal disorders. They may be caused by or linked to heavy exertion in the workplace.
Some typical examples:
- Back pain in manual workers and nursing staff
- Neck pain, tendonitis or neuropathy when working in front of a computer screen.
Why is this an important issue?
They are common
In Switzerland, 18% of working people suffer from work-related back pain.
They entail major costs for companies and the economy
26% of all work-related absences due to illness involve musculoskeletal disorders. Every year in Switzerland, back pain causes more than 100 million days’ absence from work.
They can often be avoided
Many illnesses could be avoided by better workplace design, particularly by taking account of legal requirements.
What are the risk factors?
Any harmful stress in the workplace increases the likelihood of suffering musculoskeletal problems.
Here are the main risk factors:
1
Physical factors
- Lifting and carrying heavy objects
- Awkward positions
- Nuisances caused by vibrations
2
Organisational factors
- High work rate
- Pressure
- Little autonomy
- Repetitive work
3
Individual factors
